A&E picks up 'Bates Motel' for second season

According to Hollywood.com, A&E ordered 10 new episodes on Monday for its drama, Bates Motel. The show is renewed after only being on the air for less than a month. Bates Motel is a prequel based off of the Alfred Hitchcock classic, Psycho. The show features a young Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his widowed mother Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga). The new show is the networks most watched original drama in A&E’s history, reports E! News. The series debut checked in three million people with only a small percentage checking out for the second episode. "Bates Motel has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal audience in its first few weeks," said Bob DeBitetto, president and GM of A&E. "With superb writing and exceptional acting, led by the critically acclaimed performances of Farmiga and Highmore, we're incredibly excited to see where Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin take Norma and Norman Bates next." The A&E drama is produced by Lost architects Cuse and Ehrin. Bates Motel airs Monday nights at 10 p.m. Production for the second season will begin later this year and air in 2014.
