Taylor Swift and Kacey Musgraves lead CMA nominations

They are both up for album of the year as well as best female vocalist alongside Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. Swift is also nominated for entertainer of the year, up against last year's winner Blake Shelton. Husband-and-wife singers Shelton and Lambert have five nods each. They will each be competing for their fourth consecutive wins in the male vocalist and female vocalist categories. Lambert is up for three awards as a solo artist and another two with her side-project country group, Pistol Annies. American Idol judge Keith Urban landed four nominations along with duo Florida Georgia Line. The new band are up for best musical event for the remix version of their hit Cruise featuring rapper Nelly. Bob Dylan has a nomination for single of the year for Wagon Wheel, a song written with Ketch Secor and performed by Darius Rucker. 'So grateful' Both Swift and Musgraves tweeted their happiness at their six nominations. Swift has received 21 CMA nods and won seven awards over her career, including two entertainer of the year awards. "What an excellent way to start the day. Thank you, guys. And thank you CMA," she said. While Musgraves called it: "Six great reasons to get out of bed today... So grateful!!" Musgraves's album, Same Trailer Different Park, has been critically acclaimed for its gritty ballads about the darker side of life in small town America, not normally seen in country songs. It is her first album on a major label after releasing three albums independently. Swift's album Red is her fourth studio album. It sold 1.2 million copies in its first week in the US. The CMA Awards are voted for by more than 7,000 members of the country music trade organisation. The awards, which will be hosted by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood for the sixth year, take place on 6 November.

Bertolucci hopes to be surprised by Venice entries

Bertolucci hopes to be surprised by Venice entries

VENICE, Italy — Oscar-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci initially didn't want to head the Venice Film Festival's jury, saying it's "tremendously tiring." But the 73-year-old Italian said he "caved in" after festival director Alberto Barbera wrote a letter in which "he succeeded to present some responsibilities I would have for cinema, above all for those who are starting out." "Probably after the festival I will return to Rome and I will burn that letter," Bertolucci said Wednesday on the film fest's opening day. The 70th edition kicked off Wednesday with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney starring in the 3D space odyssey "Gravity," which made its world premiere out of competition. Contenders for the coveted Golden Lion include Terry Gilliam's "The Zero Theorem," Peter Landesman's "Parkland" and Kelly Reichardt's "Night Moves." Prizes will be announced Sept. 7. "I have to say what I want most is to be surprised also in the prizes we award," Bertolucci said. The 12-day festival requires the main jury to screen 20 films for the Golden Lion. But Bertolucci, who won an Oscar in 1987 for directing "The Last Emperor," said Barbera's letter promised Bertolucci 18 films in competition for the Golden Lion, but made it 20 when the lineup was officially announced, to Bertolucci's chagrin. "He told me it was not correct," Barbera conceded.

Douglas, Zeta-Jones splitting for a while

Zeta-Jones, 43, and Douglas, 68, were married in 2000 and have two children. He was treated for throat cancer in 2010 and made headlines this summer when he said that oral sex is a potential cause of the cancer. Khloe talking divorce, report says The New York Daily News says sources tell it divorce is “imminent” for Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom, even as Kardashian tries to rescue her husband from reported cocaine addiction. Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner reportedly has taken charge of the situation because she thinks her daughter is “too emotional” and can’t see things clearly. According to the Daily News, Jenner held an emergency two-hour meeting and had multiple phone conversations this week with pit-bull divorce attorney Laura Wasser, in which they discussed the couple’s prenup and how to cut Odom out of the family. Wasser also was called on during Kim Kardashian’s divorce from Kris Humphries. Jenner and other family members reportedly have met with Khloe and told her that the marriage is beyond repair, even though, in the words of a source close to the family, “she is in love and does not want a divorce.” Rumors of NBA player Odom’s cheating with other women and his alleged cocaine use have plagued the couple’s four-year marriage. They wed just nine days after meeting in September 2009. Valerie Harper on 'DWTS'? A report at www.tmz.com says actress Valerie Harper will be a contestant on the fall season of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” Harper, 74, best known for playing Rhoda Morganstern on ’70s sitcoms “Rhoda” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” went public in March with the news that she had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. She said then that doctors had given her just a few months to live. According to TMZ, the actress has already begun practicing with her “DWTS” partner, Tristan MacManus, and is said to be in very good shape. Other names being tossed about as possible “DWTS” contestants: actresses Leah Remini and metro Detroit native Elizabeth Berkley, actress-singer Christina Milian, Snooki of “Jersey Shore” fame and ex-NFL star Keyshawn Johnson. ABC plans to officially reveal the lineup Wednesday on “Good Morning America.” Rock back on the charts Kid Rock’s big summer tour isn’t just helping his box-office standing: It also has him firmly back on the album charts. Nine months after hitting stores, “Rebel Soul” is No. 52 nationally, a week after storming back onto the charts at No. 54, thanks to on-site purchases at his shows, where Shriners have been selling the CD for $10 (and getting a portion of the proceeds). “Rebel Soul” had returned last week to the charts with 7,000 copies sold, 79% of them from concert sales, according to Billboard. Reports from venue sales are delayed, the magazine said, which means the full impact of Rock’s recent eight-show DTE run may not be reflected until later charts. Still, the hometown buzz has been good for Rock: The album just returned to the No. 1 spot in Detroit, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Briefly ■ The Detroit Jazz Festival is upon us, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t other music deserving of your attention: The great jazz and blues singer Barbara Morrison is returning home to Detroit from her longtime perch in Los Angeles to perform two nights at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge alongside trumpet legend Marcus Belgrave. She’ll do two sets tonight and Friday starting at 9 at Baker’s, 20510 Livernois, Detroit. $15. 313-345-6300 . www.theofficialbakerskeyboardlounge.com. ■ Detroit rapper Danny Brown’s “OLD” won’t be out until Sept. 30, but fans are getting a taste of what to expect via the tripped-out music video for new track “ODB,” which has been posted online. Meanwhile, at www.pitchfork.com, there’s a new story in which Brown talks about how Radiohead and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” influenced his upcoming CD. “I’m doing something I love,” Brown says. “A lot of people have sucky jobs, but I have a good one, and I’m not trying to lose it.” Brown will perform at the Mad Decent Block Party 2013 on Sept. 6 on the Elektricity Festival Grounds in Pontiac. Tickets are $28.50. For more, go to www.thecrofoot.com. Compiled by Greg Crawford with reports from staff writers Brian McCollum, Mark Stryker and B.J. Hammerstein and Free Press news services

Sideshow: Kanye gushes; North-ern exposure

Their love burns with ardor. And don't try to say otherwise. Kanye West says his liaison with Kim Kardashian isn't a sham, a publicity stunt. Au contraire, their love is so strong, each embrace has the potential to disrupt the space-time continuum. So Kanye said in an hour-long sit-down with Kim's mom, Kris Jenner, which aired Friday on the season finale of her gabfest Kris. The whole chat was something to behold. It was a work of art. Kanye said falling for Kim, his "dream girl," was so amazing that he didn't care if his association with the reality TV star would tarnish his rep as the greatest composer since Beethoven. "I could have people saying, 'This is going to damage your credibility' . . . and I say, 'I don't care. I love this woman,' " Kanye says with ardor. He said he told his posse, " 'I'm being with this person because I love this person and she's worth it to me.' " Dude, my heart just stopped. Kanye also showed a photo of baby North ("The last thing I would want to happen to my daughter is some crazy, drunk black guy in a leather shirt to come up and cut her off at an awards show" - you heard that right, Taylor Swift!). He told Kris he volunteered the pic out of love, refusing to make money off it by selling it to a magazine. A saint! 'N Sync is back, baby! Joey Fatone has distanced himself from rumors that he and the boys - Lance Bass, JC Chasez, and Chris Kirkpatrick - plan to duct-tape 'N Sync back together, if only for one show. The reports are true, Fatone's pops, Joseph Fatone Sr., tells RadarOnline. Not only is the band going to reunite at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, he claims, "they're doing a performance.
