Everyone knew a One Fund benefit concert was coming. Nobody knew it would be this big.
“Boston Strong: An Evening of Support and Celebration” will feature major Massachusetts acts including Aerosmith, Boston, New Kids on the Block, The J. Geils Band, Godsmack and James Taylor on May 30 at the TD Garden. Also pitching in are Jason Aldean, Jimmy Buffett and Carole King.
“Everyone involved has responded from the heart in a spontaneous and simultaneous desire to be there, and to do what we can for the city we love,” Taylor said. Boston rockers Extreme will reunite and do their two huge ’90s hits “More Than Words” and “Hole Hearted.” Drummer Paul Geary said it will be an “unbelievable event.”
“Having been born and raised in Boston, it is a dream-come-true, never-before/never-again line-up for me and the people of Boston,” Geary said.
At the announcement yesterday, a clearly emotional New Kid on the Block Donnie Wahlberg said, “This event affected all of us to the core. We all feel the call to give back.”
NKOTB member Joey McIntyre crossed the finish line shortly before the Boston Marathon bombs exploded, and tweeted yesterday: “So blessed to be able to help. Come remember and celebrate with us!!”
Carole King sent her love to the Hub, tweeting the day after the attacks: “Brave Boston … I love you so much.”
J. Geils frontman Peter Wolf told the Herald the band is “honored to be asked to participate.”
Wolf’s closest friend lives in Watertown not far from where suspected bombers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev got into a shootout with police. “I was on the phone with him and could hear the shots,” he said. “It was all just a senseless, tragic thing. And as it unfolds it becomes more senseless and more tragic. But it’s good that everyone is rallying together.”
Live Nation New England president Don Law pointed out the biggest move was made by the TD Garden who donated its building.
“The Garden said, ‘We’ll do everything we can to help,’ ” Law said. “All the revenue is set to go to victims.”
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday at livenation.com and ticketmaster.com, by phone (800-745-3000) and at the TD Garden Box Office. For more information on
