They are both up for album of the year as well as best female vocalist alongside Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. Swift is also nominated for entertainer of the year, up against last year's winner Blake Shelton. Husband-and-wife singers Shelton and Lambert have five nods each. They will each be competing for their fourth consecutive wins in the male vocalist and female vocalist categories. Lambert is up for three awards as a solo artist and another two with her side-project country group, Pistol Annies. American Idol judge Keith Urban landed four nominations along with duo Florida Georgia Line. The new band are up for best musical event for the remix version of their hit Cruise featuring rapper Nelly. Bob Dylan has a nomination for single of the year for Wagon Wheel, a song written with Ketch Secor and performed by Darius Rucker. 'So grateful' Both Swift and Musgraves tweeted their happiness at their six nominations. Swift has received 21 CMA nods and won seven awards over her career, including two entertainer of the year awards. "What an excellent way to start the day. Thank you, guys. And thank you CMA," she said. While Musgraves called it: "Six great reasons to get out of bed today... So grateful!!" Musgraves's album, Same Trailer Different Park, has been critically acclaimed for its gritty ballads about the darker side of life in small town America, not normally seen in country songs. It is her first album on a major label after releasing three albums independently. Swift's album Red is her fourth studio album. It sold 1.2 million copies in its first week in the US. The CMA Awards are voted for by more than 7,000 members of the country music trade organisation. The awards, which will be hosted by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood for the sixth year, take place on 6 November.

Bertolucci hopes to be surprised by Venice entries

Bertolucci hopes to be surprised by Venice entries

VENICE, Italy — Oscar-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci initially didn't want to head the Venice Film Festival's jury, saying it's "tremendously tiring." But the 73-year-old Italian said he "caved in" after festival director Alberto Barbera wrote a letter in which "he succeeded to present some responsibilities I would have for cinema, above all for those who are starting out." "Probably after the festival I will return to Rome and I will burn that letter," Bertolucci said Wednesday on the film fest's opening day. The 70th edition kicked off Wednesday with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney starring in the 3D space odyssey "Gravity," which made its world premiere out of competition. Contenders for the coveted Golden Lion include Terry Gilliam's "The Zero Theorem," Peter Landesman's "Parkland" and Kelly Reichardt's "Night Moves." Prizes will be announced Sept. 7. "I have to say what I want most is to be surprised also in the prizes we award," Bertolucci said. The 12-day festival requires the main jury to screen 20 films for the Golden Lion. But Bertolucci, who won an Oscar in 1987 for directing "The Last Emperor," said Barbera's letter promised Bertolucci 18 films in competition for the Golden Lion, but made it 20 when the lineup was officially announced, to Bertolucci's chagrin. "He told me it was not correct," Barbera conceded.

Douglas, Zeta-Jones splitting for a while

Zeta-Jones, 43, and Douglas, 68, were married in 2000 and have two children. He was treated for throat cancer in 2010 and made headlines this summer when he said that oral sex is a potential cause of the cancer. Khloe talking divorce, report says The New York Daily News says sources tell it divorce is “imminent” for Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom, even as Kardashian tries to rescue her husband from reported cocaine addiction. Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner reportedly has taken charge of the situation because she thinks her daughter is “too emotional” and can’t see things clearly. According to the Daily News, Jenner held an emergency two-hour meeting and had multiple phone conversations this week with pit-bull divorce attorney Laura Wasser, in which they discussed the couple’s prenup and how to cut Odom out of the family. Wasser also was called on during Kim Kardashian’s divorce from Kris Humphries. Jenner and other family members reportedly have met with Khloe and told her that the marriage is beyond repair, even though, in the words of a source close to the family, “she is in love and does not want a divorce.” Rumors of NBA player Odom’s cheating with other women and his alleged cocaine use have plagued the couple’s four-year marriage. They wed just nine days after meeting in September 2009. Valerie Harper on 'DWTS'? A report at www.tmz.com says actress Valerie Harper will be a contestant on the fall season of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” Harper, 74, best known for playing Rhoda Morganstern on ’70s sitcoms “Rhoda” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” went public in March with the news that she had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. She said then that doctors had given her just a few months to live. According to TMZ, the actress has already begun practicing with her “DWTS” partner, Tristan MacManus, and is said to be in very good shape. Other names being tossed about as possible “DWTS” contestants: actresses Leah Remini and metro Detroit native Elizabeth Berkley, actress-singer Christina Milian, Snooki of “Jersey Shore” fame and ex-NFL star Keyshawn Johnson. ABC plans to officially reveal the lineup Wednesday on “Good Morning America.” Rock back on the charts Kid Rock’s big summer tour isn’t just helping his box-office standing: It also has him firmly back on the album charts. Nine months after hitting stores, “Rebel Soul” is No. 52 nationally, a week after storming back onto the charts at No. 54, thanks to on-site purchases at his shows, where Shriners have been selling the CD for $10 (and getting a portion of the proceeds). “Rebel Soul” had returned last week to the charts with 7,000 copies sold, 79% of them from concert sales, according to Billboard. Reports from venue sales are delayed, the magazine said, which means the full impact of Rock’s recent eight-show DTE run may not be reflected until later charts. Still, the hometown buzz has been good for Rock: The album just returned to the No. 1 spot in Detroit, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Meanwhile, at www.pitchfork.com, there’s a new story in which Brown talks about how Radiohead and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” influenced his upcoming CD. “I’m doing something I love,” Brown says. “A lot of people have sucky jobs, but I have a good one, and I’m not trying to lose it.” Brown will perform at the Mad Decent Block Party 2013 on Sept. 6 on the Elektricity Festival Grounds in Pontiac. Sideshow: Kanye gushes; North-ern exposure

Their love burns with ardor. And don't try to say otherwise. Kanye West says his liaison with Kim Kardashian isn't a sham, a publicity stunt. Au contraire, their love is so strong, each embrace has the potential to disrupt the space-time continuum. So Kanye said in an hour-long sit-down with Kim's mom, Kris Jenner, which aired Friday on the season finale of her gabfest Kris. The whole chat was something to behold. It was a work of art. Kanye said falling for Kim, his "dream girl," was so amazing that he didn't care if his association with the reality TV star would tarnish his rep as the greatest composer since Beethoven. "I could have people saying, 'This is going to damage your credibility' . . . and I say, 'I don't care. I love this woman,' " Kanye says with ardor. He said he told his posse, " 'I'm being with this person because I love this person and she's worth it to me.' " Dude, my heart just stopped. Kanye also showed a photo of baby North ("The last thing I would want to happen to my daughter is some crazy, drunk black guy in a leather shirt to come up and cut her off at an awards show" - you heard that right, Taylor Swift!). He told Kris he volunteered the pic out of love, refusing to make money off it by selling it to a magazine. A saint! 'N Sync is back, baby! Joey Fatone has distanced himself from rumors that he and the boys - Lance Bass, JC Chasez, and Chris Kirkpatrick - plan to duct-tape 'N Sync back together, if only for one show. The reports are true, Fatone's pops, Joseph Fatone Sr., tells RadarOnline. Not only is the band going to reunite at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, he claims, "they're doing a performance.

Linda Ronstadt tells AARP she has Parkinson's, says she can't sing
dt says she began to show symptoms as long as eight years ago, but attributed her inability to sing then to a tick disease. When her hands began to tremble, Ronstadt said she thought the shaking was the result of a shoulder operation. She said she was "completely shocked" when she finally saw a neurologist and was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. "I wouldn't have suspected that in a million, billion years. "No one can sing with Parkinson's disease," Ronstadt told AARP music writer Alanna Nash. "No matter how hard you try." Ronstadt sold tens of millions of records starting in the 1970s with pop hits like "You're No Good" and "When Will I Be Loved." But she also segued into country, pop standards and mariachi music, among other genres. In addition, the singer was known for her romances with California Gov. Jerry Brown and filmmaker George Lucas. Ronstadt now uses poles to walk on uneven ground and a wheelchair when traveling, the AARP story said. Her autobiography will be released next month, but makes no mention of Parkinson's or the loss of her voice, according to AARP. The singer's New York-based managers did not immediately respond to requests from The Associated Press for comment

Jennifer Lopez's Water Mill home invaded by man camped out in pool house say cops

Entertainer Jennifer Lopez's Water Mill home was invaded this month by a man who, unbeknownst to her, had been living for a week in her pool house while she was away, Southampton police said Wednesday. Lopez had an order of protection against John M. Dubis, 49, of Rhode Island, but he somehow made it onto her property, police said. Dubis went undetected until workers on Aug. 8 noticed a suspicious male and called police, authorities said. PHOTOS: Mug shots | Notorious crimes | Caught on tape ALERTS: Get crime reports from your area | Breaking news alerts He was arraigned Aug. 9 on two felonies, second-degree burglary and first-degree criminal contempt, and two misdemeanors, fourth-degree stalking and possession of burglar tools. His next court date is Aug. 28. Details on why the singer-actress got an order of protection against Dubis were not available Wednesday night. The suspect was being held in Suffolk County jail on a $100,000 bail, police said. The Southampton Town court ordered an exam to determine if Dubis is "fit to proceed" on the criminal charges, police said in a news release. Her publicist could not be reached for comment and it was unclear whether Dubis had an attorney. Detectives on the case could not be reached Wednesday night, and other details were not available. Lopez had bought the Water Mill mansion on 3 acres in May for a reported $10 million. The eight-bedroom, 7 1/2-bath home is on a private cul-de-sac. It comes with a pool, pool house, outdoor shower, sauna, steam room and theater, according to the old listing with The Corcoran Group.

Edgar Wright, Nick Frost talk 'World's End

Edgar Wright, Nick Frost talk 'World's End

trilogy, they decided to make a pub-crawl epic. About an epic pub crawl. And in "The World's End" it is the pub crawl to end all pub crawls. At the risk, admits director Edgar Wright, of invoking British stereotypes. "I think the rest of the world thinks all British people are drunks," he deadpanned, "and I think that's only 75 percent accurate." "Or sexual failures," adds Nick Frost, Wright's collaborator and one of the film's stars. "That's actually 100 percent accurate," cracks Wright. It all started at a bar. Nine years ago Wright directed BBC sitcom pals Frost and Simon Pegg in "Shaun of the Dead," the story of two buddies who wait out a zombie apocalypse at the local watering hole. The movie was a sleeper smash in the United States and made stars of its leads (Frost is now the default Nick on the imdb.com drop-down menu, ahead of Nick Nolte). Pegg went into character and actor hyperspace - two "Star Trek" movies and a "Mission: Impossible." In the midst of it all, they're-teamed with Wright to make the cop-buddy "Hot Fuzz." Now their careers are pulling them in different directions. Wright is about to start work on the comic-book adaptation "Ant-Man" - so they're making their last planned movie as a trio. And it's . . . different. "I'm reluctant to use the word dark, because I feel like 'Shaun' and even 'Hot Fuzz' have their elements of darkness," said Wright. "But it's more honest and raw. If you set up a character as having a problem, you can't glorify it." That character is Gary King (Pegg), and his problem is alcoholism. The prologue shows him as a promising high-school student who likes to party. Cut to 40-something Gary in 12-step - haggard, desperate and broke. "We looked at Gary as somebody from a legendary band, a carouser, one of those guys you look at and you say, I can't believe he's still alive." Gary can't move forward, so in "The World's End" he is determined to move backward. He gathers former high-school mates (Frost, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan) for a hometown reunion, a chance to complete the pub crawl they started on graduation day. Wright has begged the press to preserve spoilers (though the TV spots give much away), and is willing to say only that Gary faces much pressure in the movie, from friends and others, to "conform to a more efficient society." Certainly he seems a mess, but Wright and Frost see something admirable in his arrested development. "I'd argue against him being inefficient," Frost said. "In his own way, he's ultra efficient, all that plate spinning or order to get people to go along with his idea, keeping all those lies straight." "That's true," Wright says. "An alcoholic, in his own way, has to be very organized to be successful." Wright wouldn't describe Gary as a success, but the character does turn his vices into virtues, of sorts, in the movie's bizarre finale. "We wanted Gary to be a walking car crash, but we also wanted to give him a shot at redemption, and it has to do with the idea of being flawed, of being human, and embracing that," Wright said. That was easy for Wright, Frost and Pegg, who see the stuck, hapless Gary as guy like them, but without the lucky breaks. "Simon and I put a lot of that stuff into Gary - this is how we would be if we'd been a lot less fortunate. This is definitely the most personal of the three films for us." Wright said others identify with Gary as well. "We get two types of notes. It really resonated with me because I know that guy, or it really resonated with me because I am that guy. Said Frost: "Half the people leave the theater wanting a pint, half leave the theater and never want to drink again

Ben Affleck to play Batman in 2015 Superman sequel

Ben Affleck to play Batman in 2015 Superman sequel
The 41-year-old will star opposite British actor Henry Cavill, who will reprise his role as Superman from the most recent film, Man of Steel. Director Zack Snyder revealed the big screen superhero mash-up at a comic convention in San Diego last month. Production is expected to begin next year for release in the summer of 2015. "We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics' most enduringly popular super heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill and then some," Warner Bros President Greg Silverman said in a statement. Mr Snyder, who also directed Man of Steel, said in a statement that Mr Affleck will provide an "interesting counter-balance" to 31-year old Cavill's Clark Kent. "(Affleck) has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne," said Snyder. "I can't wait to work with him." The sequel - which has yet to be given a title - will reunite Man of Steel stars Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) and Diane Lane (Martha Kent).

The Civil Wars Takes Top Spot on Billboard 200

See larger image Grammy Award-winning folk duo The Civil Wars finally bagged their first No. 1 in the Billboard 200 album chart this week with their self-titled, sophomore studio album, moving 116,000 copies despite album sales being generally down nowadays. The achievement is quite ironic and impressive as the pair are already on hiatus following "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition," not going on tour or performing any shows to promote the said album. Taking the runner-up position is the new "Now 47" compilation with 82,000 copies sold, extending the streak of all the other "Now" albums preceding it, that of debuting in the top ten, except only for the first one. Getting dethroned from last week's top spot to third place this week is Robin Thicke's phenomenal "Blurred Lines" with 65,000, down 63%, taking the spot occupied last week by Jay-Z's platinum-selling "Magna Carta... Holy Grail, which gets bumped to the fourth place this week with 48,000, down 22%. Debuting at No. 5 with 41,000 albums sold is rock band Asking Alexandria, who posts their highest charting album and best sales week so far with "From Death to Destiny". Meanwhile, holding on to the sixth spot is the "Teen Beach Movie" soundtrack with 38,000, down 19%. Bouncing back into the top ten this week is Imagine Dragons, climbing back from No. 11 to No. 7 as sales of "Night Visions" go up by 46% at 37,000. Falling to No. 8 with a 69% decline in record sales this week is last week's runner-up Five Finger Death Punch's "The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell Volume 1" with 35,000 units. Reaching the ninth spot on its debut is gospel artist Tye Tribbett's "Greater Than" with 30,000 albums moved, while rounding-up the top ten is Florida Georgia Line's "Here's to the Good Times" which stays put at No. 10 despite being slightly down by 8% with 26,000

Does Rihanna Approve Of Katy Perry’s Boyfriend, John Mayer? Do Your Friends Get A Say In Your Relationship

People has som
Does Rihanna Approve Of Katy Perry’s Boyfriend, John Mayer? Do Your Friends Get A Say In Your Relationship
e photos of Rihanna and Katy Perry eating dinner together last night, and teases us with the headline “Did John Mayer Get Rihanna’s Seal of Approval?” People doesn’t give us any information that we couldn’t have gleaned from Rihanna or Perry’s Instagram accounts, and we’re left waiting with baited breath to see if Rihanna, did, in fact, give her official approval of Perry’s boyfriend. I don’t know how I’ll sleep tonight without confirmation. All of this inner turmoil I’m experiencing leads me to question the age-old adage “If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends.” How important is it to you that that your friends approve of the person you’re getting intimate with? I’d like to believe that all intimate interactions only exist between the people having them, but I know enough about my friends’ sex lives (and they know enough about mine) to know better. We all have opinions, and I’m comforted by the idea that my friends love my boyfriend and like us together. But what happens on the other side of things? As I’ve probably made clear in every post I’ve ever written, I don’t tend to like a lot of people. This isn’t an attractive quality, and I’m trying to be more positive about people—luckily, my friends typically have excellent taste in sex partners. Occasionally, I just can’t stand the idea that my friend who we’ll call Jane is letting some massive douche put his douchey dick inside her. approve-

Oprah Winfrey: I'm sorry Switzerland racism incident got blown up

Oprah Winfrey: I'm sorry Switzerland racism incident got blown up
CNN) -- Oprah Winfrey says she's sorry for the media storm that erupted after she recounted that she was the victim of racism in a posh Swiss boutique. Winfrey's revelation last week on Entertainment Tonight led to the upscale store being identified as Trois Pommes in Zurich and its staff was immediately caught up in a frenzy of media interest. The manager of the boutique, Trudie Goetz, subsequently told CNN the entire incident was a "200 percent misunderstanding" and had nothing to do with racism. Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of Lee Daniels' "The Butler," Monday, Winfrey said the situation had been blown out of proportion. Oprah Winfrey explains 'handbag racism' Oprah returns to the silver screen Clerk tells Winfrey bag is too expensive "I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland. I'm really sorry that it got blown up," she said. "I purposely did not mention the name of the store. I'm sorry that I said it was Switzerland. "I was just referencing it as an example of being in a place where people don't expect that you would be able to be there." 'No apology needed' On Entertainment Tonight, Winfrey recounted how she had asked to see a $38,000 handbag, but the shop assistant refused to show it to her because it was "too expensive." Winfrey explained Monday that for her, racism is not usually overt. "Nobody is going to come and call me the N-word to my face, unless they are a thug on Twitter or Facebook," she said. "It shows up for me differently, it shows up (when) I'm in a store and the person doesn't obviously know that I carry the 'black card' and so they make an assessment based upon the way I look and who I am." It appears Winfrey is referring to the exclusive American Express Centurion card, which is issued by invitation only to an exclusive group of the rich and famous. Winfrey said was dressed in a Donna Karan skirt and top but was not wearing obvious symbols of wealth such as diamond jewelry or designer shoes. "You should be able to go into a store looking like whatever you look like and say 'I would like to see this' -- and that didn't happen," she said. But while she stood by it as an example, Winfrey cautioned against reading too much into the specific incident. And she rejected any idea that Switzerland should be asked to apologize to her. "It's not an indictment against the country or even that store," she said. "It was just, you know, one person who didn't want to offer me the opportunity to see the bag. So no apology necessary from the country, from Switzerland!" In her latest film, Winfrey plays the wife of the main character -- portrayed by Forest Whitaker -- who serves as a butler in the White House. Winfrey's claim 'absurd,' clerk says Meanwhile, the store clerk concerned told Swiss daily newspaper Blick, in an interview printed Sunday, that she felt "terrible" and had not been able to sleep for days. The woman, who gave her name as Adriana N. because she said she didn't want to be hassled on the street, said, "I feel as if I'm in the middle of a whirlwind. Totally powerless, as if everything's been taken from me. It's a horror, what's happened." Adriana, from Italy, said she had asked her manager if she should resign, but that Goetz had stood by her. Asked to give her version of the incident, Adriana said Winfrey had come into the store and was looking at bags when her eye was caught by a $38,000 crocodile skin number by Tom Ford. She told the newspaper, "I explained that this was exactly the same bag as the one I had in my hand. Only much more expensive. I would happily show her other bags, I said." Adriana said Winfrey's claim that she told the media mogul the bag was too expensive for her was absolutely not true. "That's absurd. I would never say such a thing to a customer. Absolutely not. Good manners and politeness are everything in this shop," she said. The store assistant added that she hadn't recognized Winfrey but that it would not have made a difference in any case. "We make a huge effort to treat everyone with the same respect and in the same way," she said.

Robin Thicke Scores His First US Number One Album With Blurred Lines

Robin Thicke Scores His First US Number One Album With Blurred Lines

Robin Thicke has landed his first ever Billboard 200 number one (WENN) His previous record was set by his 2008 album Something Else, which debuted at No. 3 with 137,000. The sales of Blurred Lines have no doubt been boosted by his smash hit summer single, also called Blurred Lines, featuring Pharrell Williams and rapper T.I. But unfortunately for the 36-year-old, he has probably spent most of the summer defending the single's video than enjoying its success! The video was slammed by women's rights activists who accused Thicke of objectifying women with the raunchy video and the lyrics. But he hit back and claimed the lyrics are “a feminist movement within itself” explaining the track was meant to stir up a debate about the relationships between women and men. Appearing on America's The Today Show the star, who said he ran the video past his wife before making it, said: "When we made the song, we had nothing but the most respect for women and - my wife, I've been with the same woman since I was a teenager." He later told GQ magazine that he, Pharrell and T.I (real name Clifford Joseph Harris) were the "perfect guys to make this" because they are all "happily married". He said: "We tried to do everything that was taboo.... everything that is completely derogatory towards women. "Because all three of us are happily married with children, we were like, 'We're the perfect guys to make fun of this.'" Watch the CLEAN version of the video below

Matt Damon's 'Elysium' is grimly enthralling

Matt Damon's 'Elysium' is grimly enthralling

With its scorched Earth and brave new world themes, Elysium (***out of four; rated R; opening Thursday in select cities and Friday nationwide) is decidedly more thought-provoking than most big-studio summer fare. Director Neill Blomkamp's dystopian sci-fi thriller is absorbing, stylish and well-acted. But it doesn't fully realize its fascinating premise, or live up to the promise established by Blomkamp's riveting last film, 2009's District 9. Set in 2154 after an apocalyptic event, humanity is divided along the lines of haves and have-nots. The 1 percenters live on Elysium, a sparkling, perfectly manicured orbiting space station modeled after the world's most luxurious havens. The masses eke out an existence on a ruined, teeming, polluted Earth. Horrible poverty, rampant crime and widespread sickness prevail. In contrast, Elysium denizens all have sumptuous homes equipped with state-of-the-art healing pods in which people are re-atomized and cured of all injuries and infirmities. VIDEO: Damon's 'Elysium' mixes politics with sci-fi REVIEWS: The latest movie reviews from USA TODAY TRAILERS: Coming soon to theaters Emigration is impossible, as enforced by Secretary of Defense Delacourt (Jodie Foster), a power-mad head in a helmet of lacquered blond hair. The only person who can level the disparities between the two worlds is the not-so-mad Max (Matt Damon), an Earth dweller who lives in a vast, bombed-out slum formerly known as Los Angeles. On the job at a prison-like factory, Max suffers a life-threatening injury that impels him to risk all and get to Elysium. He takes on a perilous mission in which he goes up against the ruthless Delacourt and Kruger (Sharlto Copley), a sadistic mercenary. Miraculously, Max retains a sense of humor and human decency even though his existence could not be grimmer. Damon is perfectly cast as Max. Ever likable, he's terrific as a reluctant hero driven by despair and inherent goodness. Many of the people he lives among are Spanish speakers, and Damon is convincingly bilingual. In contrast, those living on Elysium speak French. Such subtleties are wonderfully intelligent touches. Max re-connects with his childhood best friend Frey (Alice Braga), a nurse at an impoverished hospital and the mother of a critically ill young girl. Bound for Elysium, Max is fused with a metal casing that turns him into a kind of walking computer. He's joined on the mission by good pal Julio, soulfully played by Diego Luna. Their passage has been arranged by Spider (Wagner Moura), the leader of an underground rebel group. Max has struck a perilous bargain with Spider. Before boarding the flight he must download crucial information from the brain of a multimillionaire CEO (William Fichtner). District 9 was captivating from start to finish. Elysium is a sporadically engaging tale, as well as a potent commentary on immigration and health care policies. The striking production design by Philip Ivey, who has re-imagined Earth as one massive shantytown, is vividly immersive. There is, however, a missing component: Delacourt and President Patel (Faran Tahir) are the only Elysium residents given names. But they, like everyone else there, are essentially cardboard cutouts. Foster plays Delacourt in one megalomaniacal note. Even some sympathetic Earth residents are not multi-dimensional. A sense of fully drawn contrasting lives (not just lifestyles) would have improved a compelling concept. Blomkamp knows how to create scenarios that seem frighteningly plausible. With all its promise and smarts, it's a shame that the film ultimately degenerates into a good-guy-vs.-crazed-villain scenario. Elysium is a good movie that could have been great had it focused more on character development and class warfare subtleties and less on standard-issue firefights.

Report: Bruce Willis Leaves 'Expendables 3' Over Salary Dispute
at laziness is not the main reason why Sylvester Stallone has raged at his fellow actor Bruce Willis who has left "The Expendables 3". A source with knowledge of the situation tells The Hollywood Reporter that the latter exited the project upon learning that he would be paid $3 million for four days of consecutive work on location in Bulgaria for the ensemble movie. "He said he'd drop out unless he got $4 million," the so-called source reveals to the site. "A million dollars a day. Stallone and everybody else involved said no." The insider adds that Willis had not expected Sly could get his replacement as soon as he dropped out of the production. "I think [Willis] was pretty surprised he was replaced in 72 hours by Harrison Ford - a better actor, a much nicer person and a more interesting direction for the film." On Tuesday, August 6, Stallone sparked media frenzy with his tweets. "WILLIS OUT... HARRISON FORD IN !!!! GREAT NEWS !!!!! Been waiting years for this!!!!" He wrote, before adding, "GREEDY AND LAZY ...... A SURE FORMULA FOR CAREER FAILURE." Though he did not specifically mention any name on the second post, media have predicted that it was aimed at Willis. "Indiana Jones" star Ford is not the only new face in the franchise. Ronda Rousey, who is courted for "Fast and Furious 7", has been on board along with Kellan Lutz and welterweight boxer Victor Ortiz. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham and Mickey Rourke will return for the next sequel.

Yesterday’s Style, Today’s Hits

Yesterday’s Style, Today’s Hits

We first met Robin Thicke about a decade ago, zipping through the streets of Manhattan on a bicycle in his debut video, Jesus mane flowing behind him, then doing some sub-“Saturday Night Fever” moves in a freight elevator. The song was “When I Get You Alone,” and it sampled Walter Murphy’s “Fifth of Beethoven,” the 1976 disco-classical fusion, a hybrid of flash and seriousness that Mr. Thicke appeared perfectly comfortable with, even if few others were: wildly out of step with the sound of the time, his single never hit the American charts. Enlarge This Image Chad Batka for The New York Times On his new album, “Blurred Lines,” Robin Thicke becomes a conservator of classic soul, more respectful than inventive. Arts Twitter Logo. Go to Event Listings » Enlarge This Image Peter Kramer/NBC NewsWire, via Getty Images Mayer Hawthorne, in albums like “Where Does This Door Go,” also preserves soul without innovating it. Jump forward to “Blurred Lines,” the song that has topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks now, and that has elevated Mr. Thicke from white-soul curio to pop certainty. There he is in the crisp video, chipper and smug, in a beautifully cut suit, frolicking with barely clothed models (in the version where they’re wearing clothes at all, that is). He has the look of a man finally coming into the privilege he was sure was his all along. But don’t let the video’s modernism fool you: white-soul conservatism is the order of the day, and this hit is just as nostalgic as Mr. Thicke’s first single was, under a much cooler cover. “Blurred Lines” is influenced heavily by Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up,” and even with the producer Pharrell Williams’s clean, large drums and a sizzling, naughty guest rap by T.I., Mr. Thicke can’t help himself — he loves yesterday way more than today. That’s also clear from the bulk of his new album, also called “Blurred Lines” (Star Trak/Interscope), on which his hit is one of several songs that sound helicoptered in from three or four decades ago. Mr. Thicke may be the sound of now, but he’s only passing for contemporary. With its full-band soul arrangements that hark back to disco and before, “Blurred Lines” is a loud reminder of the fundamental conservatism of white soul. Nostalgia is a frequent hallmark of white participation in black genres, a way of signaling respect and knowledge without presuming to reshape the art form’s present. It’s a safe space, guaranteeing an audience of nostalgists and that-white-boy-can-sing true-schoolers. That leaves white singers — in the last few years, there have been Mr. Thicke, Mayer Hawthorne, Eli (Paperboy) Reed, Allen Stone, Nick Waterhouse, Jamie Lidell and many more — largely in the role of preservers of a heritage. They are tentative innovators, if innovators at all. That isn’t the case 100 percent of the time, but there hasn’t been a white-soul singer at the genre’s vanguard in quite some time, and at the moment, there is no Eminem of R&B. Luckily for Mr. Thicke, though, it so happens that 2013 is the best year in a while to be a white-soul conservative, thanks largely to the newly mature, and newly dull, Justin Timberlake, whose third album, “The 20/20 Experience” (RCA), was released in March. (A follow-up album is due next month.) At one point, just after his liberation from ’NSync, Mr. Timberlake was the vanguard figure of pop-R&B, partnering with the hip-hop visionary Timbaland to create the most inventive pop of the day. (You could also argue that ’NSync itself was an innovator in forward-thinking R&B.) But Mr. Timberlake is now 32, and far removed from his best pop star years. His sheer fame, though, has made conservatism cool. It’s in that environment that Mr. Thicke, 36, has thrived. Of the old ideas on “Blurred Lines,” the album, the title track is the most modern. Mr. Thicke is a singer of sometimes punishing sincerity; “Blurred Lines” is such a departure for him not just because it is less blatantly throwback than his typical fare, but also because he’s arching his eyebrows throughout the song, willingly poking fun at himself. But what’s striking is how unambitious most of the rest of the album is, especially the half that’s produced by Mr. Thicke with his longtime production partner Pro-Jay. They’re pleasant enough, these songs about seduction and tender love, but musically, Mr. Thicke is still interested in the same modes he was a decade ago: smooth crooning, orchestral soul, disco thump. “Ooo La La” is so slick it could pass for something by Toro Y Moi, who’s been refabricating 1980s soul through a child’s lens for the last few years. “Ain’t No Hat 4 That” is ornate and explosive — it’s a reminder that sometimes in the past, soul was a luxury concept. That idea is wrung dry like a washcloth by Mayer Hawthorne, 34, who recently released his third album, “Where Does This Door Go” (Universal Republic), full of thick disco and 1960s soul homage. Early in his career, Mr. Hawthorne was quickly upstreamed from the soul nostalgist underground to the majors, almost too quickly for him to decide whether his tepid productions were to be taken seriously. This album is his most committed to date. He has a meager voice, and a boatful of ideas, especially about the yacht-soul of the 1970s. It’s notionally erotic music — more so than Mr. Thicke’s, whose sound is more complicated — but it rarely feels sweaty, because Mr. Hawthorne won’t, or can’t, commit. Over the course of an album, his smoothness reads as aggressive shtick. Wine comes up a few times as a signifier, because, of course, it does. Mr. Hawthorne’s version of soul music is a fantasia, a collection of received ideas. It should be said, though, that in the context of his conservative peers, that insincerity feels like a kind of innovation. He knows exactly where he stands — on the outside.

Shark Week Kicks Off on Discovery: Reasons You Should Be Excited For the Annual Event

Shark Week Kicks Off on Discovery: Reasons You Should Be Excited For the Annual Event

Sunday marks the start of what I personally deem to be one of the best weeks of summer, a once-yearly opportunity to learn about one of nature's most graceful and fascinating creatures: sharks. People often laugh, or think I'm being funny when I profess my deep and abiding love for Discovery Channel's Shark Week, but let me clarify, there is absolutely nothing funny about it. Sharks are insanely old fish that somehow have managed to survive through millennia and beat out the dinosaurs because they just so happen to be equipped with some insanely bad-ass survival skills. And that deserves our respect. So for those of you who also worship at the temple of Shark Week, worry not, you have an ally in me, and for those who don't, you're about to get the shark education of your life. Here are the reasons to get excited that Shark Week starts tonight, and don't you forget 'em. 1) Chomp Shots Slow-mo shots of sharks, chompin' on pretty much everything make this week epic. You haven't lived until you've watched a huge Great White chomp the living shit out of a seal decoy. 2) You really haven't heard enough Australian and South African accents recently Although sharks are the obvious stars of Shark Week, the supporting members are definitely the crazy-ass Aussies and South Africans who live their lives getting close to sharks despite all survival instinct urging them not to do so. Seriously, watching middle-aged Australians casually tell stories of how their leg almost got nommed off makes you realize that pretty much anything you do ever is still not nearly as brave as their everyday existence. 3) Slow-motion everything Do you ever feel like television happens way too quickly? Then Shark Week is for you, because it is almost entirely in slow-mo. How else are we supposed to get amazing views of shark attacks without footage that's slowed down about 1,000 percent? We're not, that's how. 4) It's very easy to pretend you're a shark Dude. They're like huge-ass fishies that have 80 zillion teeth and an interesting attitude. No one has seen them mate and they can get mad air, just by being vicious sharks. When it's hot as hell out in New York, it's really nice to engage with the shark-y part of one's personality. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming swimming swimming.

Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi revealed as 12th Doctor

The 55-year-old Glasgow-born star will be the 12th actor to play the Doctor, replacing outgoing lead Matt Smith. Capaldi is best known for his role as foul-mouthed spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker in the BBC series The Thick of It. "It's so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer, but it's been so fantastic," he said after the news was revealed on a live BBC One show. The actor had been the bookmakers' favourite to take on the role, with betting on him becoming the next Doctor suspended on Friday. It is not the first time Capaldi has appeared on the show - he played Roman merchant Caecilius in 2008 Doctor Who adventure The Fires of Pompeii. At 55, he is the same age as William Hartnell when he was cast in the role as the first Doctor in 1963. "Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can't wait to get started," he said. Secret audition Continue reading the main story Peter Capaldi The 12 Doctors 1. Peter Capaldi (2013 - ) Steven Moffat, the show's lead writer and executive producer, said casting Capaldi as the Doctor was an "incendiary combination". "One of the most talented actors of his generation is about to play the best part on television." Moffat said Capaldi had been cast after a secret audition at his house. "We made a home video of [Capaldi] being the doctor and I showed it around and everyone said 'yes, that's the Doctor'. Moffat added the actor had "briefly flicked through my mind" the last time he was casting the role, but he did not think he was right for the part, however "now that moment has arrived". Capaldi said he downloaded old Doctor Who scripts from the internet and practiced the lines in front of a mirror to prepare for the audition. He revealed he was filming a BBC adaptation of The Three Musketeers in Prague when he found out he got the part. "I had my phone on silent so I missed the call," he said. "It was my agent and I rang her up and she said 'hello Doctor' - I haven't stopped laughing since." 'Incredible incarnation' Outgoing Doctor Matt Smith welcomed Capaldi's casting, who pre-recorded a message for the new Time Lord. "I wish my successor all the best and say good luck and good on you for getting it, because I know he's both a huge fan of the show and a really nice guy," he said. Peter Capaldi introduces himself as the new Doctor "The casting made me ready excited and as a fan I think it's a canny choice. If I had to pick someone, I'd pick him because I think he's great. I'm excited because I know what's coming and he's going to have a blast." Jenna Coleman, who stars as current Doctor Who companion Clara, said: "I'm so excited Peter Capaldi is the man taking on the challenge of becoming the 12th Doctor. "With Steven's writing and his talent I know we'll be making an amazing show with an incredible incarnation of number 12. I can't wait to start this new adventure." Ben Stephenson, controller of BBC Drama Commissioning said Capaldi was "an extraordinarily talented actor who can seemingly turn his hand to anything". "We can't wait to premiere his unique take on the Doctor on Christmas Day and we are sure he's going to become one of the all-time classic Doctors." Following the announcement, The Thick of It writer Armando Ianucci tweeted: "There can't be a funnier, wiser, more exciting Time Lord than Peter Capaldi. The universe is in great hands."

In ABC's 'S.H.I.E.L.D.,' human agents take the stage

In ABC's 'S.H.I.E.L.D.,' human agents take the stage
ABC's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will highlight the people without superpowers. "Everybody matters. People who get shunted to the side in a giant epic can take the spotlight," says executive producer Joss Whedon, who directed and co-wrote the pilot. S.H.I.E.L.D. follows a group of agents led by the revived Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), who died in The Avengers film, that investigates the strange and unknown around the world. In the pilot, the agents track a mysterious group called The Rising Tide. S.H.I.E.L.D. is "a transnational organization that's protecting humanity and bringing humanity together," Gregg says. S.H.I.E.L.D. exists in the same Marvel universe that includes Iron Man and Thor and takes place after the action of The Avengers, which was directed by Whedon. There are likely to be tie-ins and connections to other Marvel characters in the series, but that's not the main goal. "There will be as much (synergy) as we can allow. It's a fun opportunity. It's not the reason behind the show. We want people to come back because of these people," Whedon says, referring to series cast members who joined him on stage for a presentation today at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif. Whedon, who will direct The Avengers sequel and is already working on the project, says he will stay as involved in the series "as much as an executive producer can who's also making a movie." He says he will also rely on a strong staff of producers and writers, which include executive producers Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon, his brother. Producers hope the show can appeal to the huge Marvel fan base and to an even larger audience. "Every week, it's not going to be some new hero. It can be a device. It can be a mystery. There are so many aspects to what's happened since everybody in the world found out (in The Avengers that) there was this superhero team and there are aliens who invade New York," Joss Whedon says. "We want to deal with every aspect, spy stuff, hero stuff, heartfelt stuff, humor, obviously. We want something that feels a bit different, so it's not just turkey every day."

Lady GaGa to Perform ARTPOP Single at MTV Video Music Awards

Lady GaGa to Perform ARTPOP Single at MTV Video Music Awards possible first single "Applause" from her much-anticipated new studio album "ARTPOP" coming out on August 19, it's now announced that Lady GaGa will first perform it live right at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It will be the 27-year-old entertainer's first performance since being sidelined by a hip surgery earlier this year. As for other firsts, so far only GaGa has been confirmed to perform at this year's awards ceremony, with less than a month away from the expectedly star-studded show. Top nomination getters as Justin Timberlake, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Bruno Mars, Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus, Pink and 30 Seconds to Mars are most likely being eyed for the line-up of performers. GaGa is no stranger to the MTV VMAs stage, having performed her hits on the annual awards ceremony, "Paparazzi" back in 2009 and "You and I" in 2011. She had also previously debuted her album "Born This Way" with a first time live performance of the title track but at a different awards show, the 2011 Grammy Awards. Aside from performing at the VMAs, the Mother Monster has also bagged several Moonman trophies from MTV including the one for her Video of the Year award for her "Bad Romance" music video, which she accepted while wearing her infamous meat dress.

Claws and Heart Get a Workout in Japan
Though I sometimes tire of the sufferings of superheroes, I have a permanent soft spot for the Wolverine, the Marvel mutant whose indestructibility causes him endless physical and existential pain. As played by Hugh Jackman through six “X-Men” features (including one about the Wolverine’s origins), he is a shaggy, soulful, perpetually roughed-up character, and a bit of a misfit even among his peers. More About This Movie The Wolverine Overview Tickets & Showtimes New York Times Review Cast, Credits & Awards Readers' Reviews Trailers & Clips View Clip... Enlarge This Image Ben Rothstein/20th Century Fox The Wolverine's Japanese bodyguard, Yukio (Rila Fukushima). “The Wolverine,” directed by James Mangold (“Walk the Line,” “3:10 to Yuma”) and written by Mark Bomback and Scott Frank, is also something of an anomaly in the current, unstoppable wave of comic-book-based movies. It has all the requisite special effects and big-ticket action sequences — including a fight on a moving train and a climactic punch-out between the hero and a villain in an oversize metal suit — but it also has an unusually intimate, small-scale feel. Inspired by a series published by Marvel in the 1980s, it has more old-style comic-book atmosphere than “Man of Steel” or “Iron Man 3.” Instead of expounding a tedious origin story or staging an epic battle for apocalyptic stakes, “The Wolverine” focuses on a specific and self-contained adventure in a richly imagined place. That would be Japan, where Logan (as the bewhiskered berserker is also known) witnesses the bombing of Nagasaki at the end of World War II. The destruction of cities is of course a staple of action moviemaking, and it is usually saved for the end and shown in crashing, flaming detail. Mr. Mangold defies clichĂ© by dramatizing the actual devastation of a city from a discreet distance early in the film. The atomic bomb casts its shadow over the rest of the movie — much as the Holocaust did in “X-Men: First Class” — in a sober, tactful way, a sign that the filmmaker is not simply stirring reality into fantasy but rather trying to think about the relationship between them. After a detour into present-day Alaska, where he proves himself a friend to grizzly bears and an enemy of hunters and personal grooming, Logan is spirited back to Japan. There he finds himself embroiled in a complicated family crisis involving yakuza, samurai, corporate bosses and corrupt politicians. To ensure that no Japanese cultural archetype goes unexploited, Logan’s guide and self-appointed bodyguard is a J-Pop warrior pixie named Yukio (Rila Fukushima) who brings a bright splash of anime color and energy to the movie. Yukio works for the dysfunctional and powerful Yashida clan, whose patriarch (Haruhiko Yamanouchi) Logan rescued from the radiation in Nagasaki. Yashida’s granddaughter Mariko (Tao Okamoto) serves as both damsel in distress — everyone in Japan wants to kidnap her, it seems — and Logan’s love interest. Because he is technically ageless, this is almost not creepy, but also not entirely convincing. I will leave the plot to spoil itself, pausing to take note of Svetlana Khodchenkova’s slinky femme fatale turn as the Viper and Famke Janssen’s ghostly appearance as Jean Grey, the long-dead love of Logan’s very long life. She appears in his dreams to remind him and the audience that within that adamantium skeleton beats a soft and sensitive heart. And Mr. Jackman, for all his growling, flexing and macho wisecracking, keeps our attention focused on Logan’s feelings. So does Mr. Mangold, even as he obeys the imperatives of the action-franchise machine. A modest superhero picture may sound like a contradiction in terms, but really it is a welcome respite. A short one, to be sure. An end-credits teaser — stay in your seat! — promises a planet-threatening spectacle to come, probably next summer. No wonder the Wolverine looks tired. “The Wolverine” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). The hero’s claws do a lot of killing, but the gore is edited away. The Wolverine Opens on Friday. Directed by James Mangold; written by Mark Bomback and Scott Frank; director of photography, Ross Emery; edited by Michael McCusker; music by Marco Beltrami; production design by François Audouy; costumes by Isis Mussenden; produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Hutch Parker; released by 20th Century Fox. Running time: 2 hours 6 minutes. WITH: Hugh Jackman (Logan/Wolverine), Hiroyuki Sanada (Shingen), Famke Janssen (Jean Grey), Will Yun Lee (Harada), Rila Fukushima (Yukio), Tao Okamoto (Mariko), Svetlana Khodchenkova (Viper) and Haruhiko Yamanouchi (Yashida). Jeffrey Deitch to quit as head of L A Museum of Contemporary Art

Jeffrey Deitch to quit as head of L A Museum of Contemporary Art

Jeffrey Deitch has made it official: He'll be stepping down after a stormy three years as director of L.A.'s Museum of Contemporary Art. The MOCA board said it had launched a search for his successor. Deitch told the board of his decision to leave at its meeting Wednesday, according to a MOCA statement. "He will stay on to ensure a smooth transition and the successful completion" of a campaign begun in March to boost MOCA's endowment to $100 million, the statement said. The statement said the campaign is "expected to close this fall." MOCA said this spring it had $75 million in pledges, but provided no update Wednesday. GRAPHIC: MOCA's relationship with Jeffrey Deitch It was not immediately clear whether Deitch, whose resignation comes slightly more than three years into his five-year contract, has committed to stay until a new director is on the job, or only until the endowment campaign is done. MOCA said it had formed a search committee with three leaders: Maria Bell and David Johnson, who co-chair MOCA's board, and Joel Wachs, a former Los Angeles City Council member. Wachs is now president of the New York City-based Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, which issues millions of dollars in annual grants to museums and other nonprofit art groups. The announcement of Deitch's resignation came with words of praise from the MOCA board's co-chairs. "As colleagues, friends and great admirers of Jeffrey Deitch's talent, we respect his decision and thank him for his tremendous dedication," Johnson said. "His efforts have helped to solidify MOCA's financial stability while changing the way Angelenos, and those around the world, engage with contemporary art." As a leader in the search for Deitch's successor, Wachs is no newcomer to MOCA. TIMELINE: MOCA in flux As the City Council president in the early 1980s, Wachs negotiated the long-term lease under which MOCA pays $1 a year to occupy the cavernous city-owned former warehouse and police car repair building in downtown's Little Tokyo that is now known as the Geffen Contemporary. After a remodeling by architect Frank Gehry, it opened in 1983 as MOCA's first exhibition space. One unusual condition Wachs has said he insisted upon was a place for L.A.'s mayor and City Council president on MOCA's board. Wachs served on the board himself, and Mayor Eric Garcetti and City Council President Herb Wesson are now board members. Deitch, who took over as museum director in June 2010, was a controversial choice because he didn't come from nonprofit museum or academic ranks. He had won respect as a successful New York City art dealer whose sales helped him float an adventurous program of exhibitions at his Deitch Projects gallery. Some of the exhibitions Deitch brought to MOCA proved divisive, with some observers fearing that the museum was tilting too much toward the pop culture emphasis he'd pioneered at his gallery. Being a flashpoint for debate can be healthy at a museum, but money also has been a problem during Deitch's MOCA tenure. CRITIC'S PICKS: What to see, hear, do and more this weekend He took over the top job soon after MOCA survived a financial near-meltdown. In 2008, years of spending money from its endowment and plunging financial markets put it on the edge of collapse. After a rescue by billionaire art patron Eli Broad, an interim director, former UC Chancellor Charles Young, saw the museum through austerity measures and put it on a course to a stronger financial position. Public filings reflecting Deitch's first two years on the job showed a steep drop in fundraising from what Young had been able to help engineer. During Deitch's recently completed third fiscal year, the museum's budget fell to $14.3 million — the lowest in actual dollars since the late 1990s, and 28% lower with inflation taken into account. One key source of MOCA revenue will soon run out. Broad's 2008 bailout pledge called for $15 million over five years to help fund exhibitions. The second-to-last quarterly payment of $750,000 was due July 1, and the last one is due Oct. 1. MOCA's ability to stage significant exhibits is also a question mark. The museum had five curators when Deitch arrived; now it has two. Art museums often schedule exhibitions far in advance, but as of Wednesday MOCA listed only one show beyond the four now running at its three venues — a retrospective on the career of Los Angeles artist Mike Kelley, due to open next March. MOCA also announced Wednesday that real estate investor Fred Sands will be its board president, with Eugenio Lopez, Lillian Lovelace and Maurice Marciano becoming vice chairs. Marciano, a co-founder of the Guess apparel company, joined the board last year. The others have been MOCA trustees for at least eight years. Sands gave $2 million to the museum in 2009, and the other three were named in April among MOCA supporters who had pledged at least $1 million to the endowment campaign.

Chuck NorrisWalker Texas Ranger house is for sale

Chuck NorrisWalker Texas Ranger house is for sale

They say Chuck Norris doesn't host an open house. He decides you're going to buy his house. Norris doesn't want the Dallas-area home that once served as the on-screen domicile of his alter ego Cordell Walker on "Walker, Texas Ranger," so he's listed it. According to the Associated Press, the four-bedroom home in the Dallas neighborhood of Northwood Hills has been put on the market for $1.2 million. That includes a weight room, seven bathrooms, a theater and a separate building on the property that was used as a studio during production of "Walker," which aired on CBS from 1993 to 2001. It does not include a kicking room. Even Walker liked to leave his work at the office. The 7,362-square-foot home was co-owned by Norris and his brother, Aaron Norris. The real estate agent in charge of selling the home told the AP that Norris and his wife owned other homes in the area and were looking to downsize. The house was first listed on Friday and several potential buyers have already toured the home. At Chuck Norris' house, an open front door isn't an
